Dry Needling involves inserting a thin sterile acupuncture needle of varying lengths into different points in the body. It is essentially creating "tiny lesions" to promote increased blood flow and oxygenation to tissue, decrease tension in restricted tissue, and calm the nervous system. It can also be used to release trigger points by eliciting a "twitch response", which is a sudden contraction and subsequent relaxation of the treated muscle. This allows the muscle to do a better job performing its role in stabilization or movement. Releasing the tightness in the muscle allows it to contract and relax better and improves the inherent strength of the muscle. The results are quick and significant!
It’s important to remember that dry needling, while not particularly painful, can feel somewhat uncomfortable. Most effective muscle treatments are the same in this regard, however, if you’re a little squeamish, dry needling might not be for you. Our expert physical therapists can recommend other forms of pain management if you are not comfortable with dry needling.
Dry needling should be used in conjunction with a personalized exercise program and not a stand-alone treatment.
